The Ateneu Model#
Barcelona’s ateneus (community-owned civic/cultural centres) are a participation model unique to Catalonia — self-governing, community-funded, some dating to the 19th century. They provide civic meeting space, arts programming, education, and cultural events at neighborhood scale. This is bottom-up participation infrastructure with 150+ years of institutional memory.
40+ municipal markets form a vendor participation network denser than any city except Mexico City. La Boqueria is the famous one, but the real story is the 39 others — daily, neighborhood-scale, vendor-operated.
Fab Lab Barcelona (at IAAC) was the first in the EU and remains globally significant for the Fab City initiative — municipal maker infrastructure as intentional policy.
